The Writing and Communication Center offers individual SPEAK Test preparation for graduate students and Graduate Teaching Assistants at Missouri S&T. Our graduate tutors provide guided speaking practice designed to help you understand the test, strengthen your communication skills, and prepare strategically for test day.
SPEAK preparation is not a one-size-fits-all workshop. You will work individually with a graduate tutor to identify the areas where you need the most practice and build a preparation plan around your goals.

For the SPEAK test, you won't be expected to memorize answers or eliminate your accent. Instead, our graduate coaches will help you strengthen the clarity, organization, and effectiveness of your spoken communication.
Each graduate student brings different strengths and challenges to the SPEAK Test. Some may need more practice organizing answers quickly, while others may want to focus on pronunciation, pacing, classroom explanations, or responding to questions.
Your coach will help you determine where to focus your preparation and will provide structured opportunities to practice those skills.
Sessions are low-pressure and developmental. You can return for multiple appointments as you prepare, allowing you to practice, receive feedback, and track your progress over time.
Students working with WCC graduate coaches also have access to our Speaking & Communication Practice for Graduate Students Canvas course.
The course includes guided activities, examples, and practice exercises that coaches can use with you during appointments. SPEAK Test preparation is one part of this larger resource, which also supports graduate students preparing for:
You do not need to complete the entire course. Your coach will help you select the activities that are most useful for your preparation.
To get started, schedule an appointment with a Writing and Communication Center graduate coach and indicate that you would like to work on SPEAK Test preparation.
The WCC cannot guarantee a particular SPEAK Test result, but we can help you prepare deliberately, practice effectively, and understand how to strengthen your spoken communication.
