Build a Sustainable Scholarly Writing Practice
Finding time to write is one challenge of the early faculty years. Learning how to move projects from ideas and drafts to finished, publishable scholarship is another.
The WCC Faculty Writing Program supports assistant professors as they develop the writing practices, projects, and publication strategies that will carry them toward tenure and beyond. The program combines structured writing time, individualized support, practical workshops, and a community of faculty writers.
Rather than simply encouraging faculty to “write more,” the program helps participants make meaningful progress on the scholarly work already on their desks.
Who Is the Program For?
The Faculty Writing Program is designed primarily for assistant professors prior to their third-year review who want structured support for developing and publishing their scholarship.
Participants may enter the program with work at any stage—from an early idea or conference paper to a manuscript already undergoing revision.
What Does the Program Provide?
Faculty Writing Program activities vary throughout the academic year and may include:
- Dedicated writing time that protects space for sustained scholarly work
- Writing groups that provide structure, accountability, and community
- Individual consultations focused on a faculty member's particular project or writing goals
- Manuscript development and editing support to help writers strengthen work in progress
- Publication planning for identifying realistic projects, priorities, and submission goals
- Workshops addressing common challenges in scholarly writing and publishing
- Revision support for interpreting and responding strategically to reviewer and editor feedback
- Grant-writing support for developing clear, persuasive proposals and narratives
Support Across the Publication Process
You do not need to wait until you have a polished manuscript to work with us.
The WCC can help at multiple points in the scholarly writing process: defining and focusing a project, creating a manageable writing plan, developing an argument, working through a difficult draft, preparing a manuscript for submission, or approaching a revise-and-resubmit.
Our role is not to replace disciplinary expertise. You bring the expertise in your field; we bring expertise in writing, rhetoric, revision, and the processes that help complex projects move forward.
Writing for Tenure—and Beyond
Publication expectations make scholarly productivity especially important before tenure, but the Faculty Writing Program is intended to do more than help faculty reach the next review.
The habits that make scholarly writing sustainable—setting realistic goals, breaking large projects into manageable stages, developing effective revision practices, responding productively to feedback, and protecting time for writing—remain valuable throughout an academic career.
Our goal is to help early-career faculty not only complete the project in front of them, but develop a writing practice they can continue to use.
Get Involved
Faculty can participate in individual activities or engage with the program throughout the academic year. You do not need to have a finished draft or a fully developed publication plan before reaching out.
