The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (Gilman Program) provides up to $5,000 in merit-based scholarships to outstanding American undergraduate students with high financial need to pursue credit-bearing academic studies and career-oriented internships abroad. These opportunities equip Gilman Scholars with international experience, global networks, and foreign language skills essential to advancing the U.S. economic competitiveness and national security.

The WCC offers the following supports for the Goldwater Scholarship Application.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship & Excellence in Education Foundation is an independent agency of the federal government. Congress created it in 1986 to honor Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona and to invest in the people who will keep the United States at the forefront of scientific discovery: undergraduates preparing for research careers in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.

We encourage scholarship applicants to visit the WCC early and return often throughout the application process.

You do not need to have a finished draft before making an appointment. In fact, some of the most productive consultations happen before drafting begins. A WCC consultant can help you talk through a prompt, identify the story you want your application to tell, decide what experiences to emphasize, or work through an idea that you have not yet figured out how to put into words.

As your application develops, return with drafts. We can help you consider organization, clarity, specificity, audience, tone, and the connections among different pieces of your application. Later consultations can focus on revision and polishing.

Think of scholarship writing as a process rather than an appointment:

Applicants are welcome to schedule multiple consultations as their materials develop.
