Teaching and Writing in an AI-Enabled University

Generative AI has changed the conditions under which students write, learn, and communicate. The Writing and Communication Center helps faculty respond thoughtfully by making intentional decisions about the role AI should play in student learning.

The WCC supports faculty in designing assignments, establishing expectations, teaching responsible AI collaboration, and adapting writing instruction and assessment for an AI-enabled environment.

AI-Supported or AI-Resistant?

There is no single “AI policy” that works for every course or assignment. The WCC can help faculty examine an assignment and identify what students actually need to learn by doing the work themselves and what tasks, if any, could appropriately be supported by AI.

For an AI-supported assignment, we can help you determine where AI use makes pedagogical sense and build expectations for disclosure, verification, critical evaluation, and human decision-making into the prompt.

For an AI-resistant assignment, we can help you redesign the task so that the most important work depends on course-specific knowledge, process, interaction, reflection, or other forms of authentic student engagement rather than relying primarily on prohibitions or AI-detection tools.

The goal in either case is the same: protect the learning you care about.

Generative AI Services for Faculty

• AI & Assignment Prompt Review
  Send us an existing assignment or prompt. We can help identify how generative AI might interact with the task, clarify expectations for students, and consider whether the assignment should prohibit, limit, permit, or intentionally incorporate AI. We can also help revise prompts to better support the kind of student thinking and writing you want to see.
• Classroom Visits
  Invite the WCC to your class for a focused conversation or activity about generative AI and writing. Visits can address responsible AI use, evaluating AI-generated material, prompting, verification, authorship, disclosure, or expectations for a particular assignment. We can tailor the visit to your course, discipline, and AI policy.
• AI, Feedback & Grading Consultations
  Generative AI can also change how faculty respond to student writing. We can help instructors think through responsible uses of AI for developing feedback, working with rubrics, identifying patterns across student work, or supporting the grading process while maintaining faculty judgment, student privacy, and appropriate human oversight.
• Faculty Workshops & Instruction
  The WCC offers instruction for individual faculty, departments, and programs on using generative AI effectively and responsibly. Sessions can range from an introduction to prompting to more advanced work with AI-assisted writing workflows, assignment design, feedback, verification, and responsible human–AI collaboration.
• Course & Curriculum Consultation
  For faculty who want to think beyond a single assignment, we can help examine how generative AI fits across a course. Together, we can identify where students should work independently, where AI-supported practice may be valuable, and how expectations can develop as students gain disciplinary expertise.
