What to Expect from a WCC Session
You don’t need to have a finished draft—or even a draft at all—to visit the Writing and Communication Center. WCC consultants can work with you at any stage of the process, from figuring out what an assignment is asking you to do to putting the finishing touches on a final draft.
Our goal is not to “fix” your writing for you. Instead, your consultant will work with you to identify priorities, talk through options, and develop strategies you can use both on your current project and in future work.
Choose the Session That Works for You
- Face-to-Face Sessions
Meet one-on-one with a WCC consultant in the Writing and Communication Center. You and your consultant will look at your work together, discuss your questions and goals, and focus on the areas that will be most useful to you.
- Synchronous Online Sessions
Meet with a consultant live through Microsoft Teams. These sessions work much like face-to-face appointments: you can share your screen or document, ask questions, and talk through your work together in real time.
- Asynchronous Sessions
Can’t meet at a scheduled time? Submit your work for written feedback. A WCC consultant will review your submission during the time you've selected and provide comments designed to help you decide what to revise and what your next steps should be. Because you won’t be there to answer questions, be sure to tell us what you’re working on and what kind of feedback would be most helpful.
What Should I Bring?
Bring whatever you have. Depending on where you are in the process, that might include:
- the assignment prompt or instructions
- a draft, outline, notes, or brainstorming
- your professor’s feedback or a grading rubric
- sources or other materials you are working with
- specific questions or concerns you want to discuss
Most importantly, bring your goals for the session. You don’t have to know exactly what is wrong or what needs to change. Something as simple as “I’m not sure my organization makes sense” or “I don’t know how to get started” gives your consultant a useful place to begin.
What Will I Leave With?
Every session is different, but you should leave with a clearer sense of what to do next. That might include:
- a plan for drafting or revising
- feedback on the areas you and your consultant prioritized
- strategies for addressing recurring writing or communication challenges
- answers to questions about your assignment or writing process
- resources you can use as you continue working
A WCC session is meant to help you become a more confident, independent writer who knows what your next steps are and how to take them.
