Employment at the Writing & Communication Center

Working at the Writing & Communication Center (WCC) is an opportunity to help fellow students become more confident, effective communicators while developing valuable professional skills of your own.

WCC consultants work with writers and speakers from across Missouri S&T, supporting projects at every stage of the communication process. Consultants collaborate with students to help them develop ideas, solve problems, make informed rhetorical choices, and strengthen their writing and communication practices. 

And we have plenty of fun in the process!

Undergraduate consultants work one-on-one with Missouri S&T students on writing and communication projects. Consultants may help students brainstorm ideas, organize drafts, revise written work, prepare presentations, interpret assignment expectations, or develop strategies they can carry into future projects.

Strong applicants are thoughtful communicators who enjoy working with other students and are willing to learn. Previous tutoring experience is helpful but not required. New consultants receive training and ongoing professional development through the WCC.

Graduate consultants provide advanced writing and communication support to graduate students across disciplines. In addition to consultations, graduate consultants may assist with specialized WCC programs such as thesis and dissertation support, technical editing, publication preparation, workshops, and other graduate communication initiatives.

Graduate consultants should be strong writers and communicators who are comfortable working collaboratively with complex academic and professional texts.

The best WCC consultants are not necessarily people who believe they know every grammar rule or always produce a perfect draft. We look for people who are curious, dependable, thoughtful, and genuinely interested in helping others communicate well.

Successful consultants are willing to listen carefully, ask good questions, offer constructive feedback, and recognize that effective communication looks different across disciplines, genres, audiences, and situations.
